Artificial Grass on Garden Decking

Artificial turf installation is becoming increasingly popular and many people are having artificial grass laid in their residential, commercial or sporting properties and venues. It’s unsurprising really, because artificial grass is so versatile and easy to install without half the general maintenance of a natural lawn.

You can lay artificial grass over your decking

Some people are now asking whether artificial grass can be laid over garden decking and this is an interesting question. It may seem unusual, but people are enjoying artificial turf so much they want to have a grass surface in even the most unlikely of places, and Lothian Decking and Fencing can confirm it’s a great way of bringing your garden decking back to life.

Garden decking can look tired and messy, but artificial grass can give it an uplift

Garden decking has been extremely popular in recent years, but in time it can become messy and untidy looking. due to wear and tear. Rather than the upheaval of removal and replacement, some are exploring the option of refreshing the decking by giving it a new surface – artificial grass!

Large gap check

Of course, you’ll need to check for large gaps, because if you are going to cover it, they need to be smaller than about 1cm. If the gaps on your decking are larger than that then you could find that the fake grass will start to fall into them, making it easy to trip and fall over them and naturally, it won’t look good either.

Remove everything, clean the area and remove all debris

Remove all your decorations, accessories and garden furniture before you start, and scrub the decking down, removing all debris before starting. Any broken decking boards need to be replaced and repaired before you install a grass surface. A weed membrane should be installed underneath your fake grass so weeds will be prevented from growing through the surface. If for whatever reason you can’t lay weed membrane down, then a thick overlay before the grass installation is the next best thing.

Measuring your garden decking’s gradients

The gradient for water drainage is important because your garden decking will have originally been built on a slight gradient in order for water to drain adequately. However, if it’s increased at all, it may make the artificial grass pull away. By measuring it you can check to see whether you need to do something about this prior to installation.

Can artificial turf make my decking rot underneath?

That’s a good question. All you really need to do is make sure your decking is properly installed, and if it was and installed by trained professionals it will have had adequate drainage built in including weed restriction. If your artificial grass is fitted properly over it then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
