How to Clean Garden Decking with a Pressure Washer

If you’re thinking of washing your garden decking, you’re probably preparing both the deck and yourself. It may have been awhile since you cleaned it, or it may be the first time, and now you realise it needs a good clean. Cleaning garden decking isn’t the hard work it may seem, and it’s much easier to take care of than you think. However, you may be a little concerned about using a pressure washer.

Pressure Washing Rids Your Garden Decking of Stubborn Dirt

In this post we’re going to be going over the use of a pressure washer to clean your garden decking, as a way of getting rid of stubborn stains. Using a pressure washer is a good way of getting rid of any lichen, moss and algae and by using a pressure washer, you save yourself the hard work of having to use a broom, although it might be a good idea to brush quickly before you use the washer, however this will be fairly minimal. It will remove any debris, grime and dirt so your decking is beautifully clean once you’ve finished.

Before you start, make sure you clear your patio of everything, this is anything from pots, plants and any furniture. Use a broom to brush loose debris away. Now you’re ready.

Your Hose Should Be of a Certain Length and Thickness

Connect the hose and allow the water to run freely from it, the hose itself should be of reasonable length so you can use it with ease, perhaps at least 7.5m and at least around ½ an inch in thickness. Make sure the hose is free of kinks or potential knots. Once your pressure washer is connected to the electricity supply, you can now apply some detergent to help dissolve any stubborn dirt on the garden decking. You can also possibly get a detergent that helps add some protection to your decking and protect the surfaces from further weather damage.

Using Specialist Detergents on Garden Decking

When you are pressure washing your garden decking there is detergents that come specifically with UV protection as well as helping to rid your decking of stubborn dirt. This may be a better alternative to using a nozzle, because the use of nozzles on the end of a pressure washer can make the stream of water considerably more powerful. This won’t help your garden decking and could damage it, a nozzle is usually best for stone or brickwork. How to Clean Your Wooden Decking

If you're new to wooden decking and you've been enjoying it since it's installation, you may be looking at it now and and beginning to realise it needs a good clean. Perhaps you're concerned about which technique you should use and which cleaning products are best. It's Time to Clean That Garden Decking

Your garden decking looks amazing when it's new. It sits there as an inviting area in which to sit during the warmer months and you've been happy to entertain guests on it. However, as its aged it starting to look a bit lived in, which is great, because wood is full of character as it gets older. Thing is, you do need to maintain it, it needs a good clean every now and again to keep it in good condition.

Start With a Simple Sweep

If you maintain the integrity of the wood, it will serve you well over the years. To start simply, make sure you clean away any debris lying around the decking. Sweeping away debris on a fortnightly basis can make a real difference to the decking which you will see in next to no time.

Wash the Decking Once a Year

On an annual basis it's a good idea to wash the decking completely. Before you do this make sure you clear away any furniture, plants and any small items before you start. Remove rubbish by hand and then carry out your usual sweep of the area, check any debris that may be trapped between deck boards.

It's Time to Bring the Garden Hose Out

If you have a garden hose then that's great, but you can purchase one at any DIY/garden store if you haven't. You'll also need a spray attachment which will be powerful enough to clean the deck and rinse away dirt. If you can spot heavily stained or heavily muddied areas on the decking, switch the hose onto full power and aim at the dirtiest areas. Rinse the entire deck afterwards.

Cleanse and Wash

If you're wondering which solution to use to cleanse and clean the deck, then a mild solution of laundry washing up powder/detergent is more than sufficient. Then use a brush again around the entire deck and finish off by using the garden hose once more to remove the solution.

Mildew & Algae

If you have any mildew or algae it may need something a little stronger to remove, so a solution with a little bleach on it will suffice, but don't use too much in case you damage the decking. Always make sure you rinse away the bleach afterwards. Allow it to dry thoroughly before applying sealant.

After it's dried and sealed, you can put all your garden furniture back along with any other items you keep on the decking.

Fading

Being outside, your garden decking is prone to the vagaries of British weather. With this in mind, it's only natural that as time goes by, your decking will start to fade. It will also warp and crack over the years because it's made of wood.

The fading, warping and cracking can give the decking some character, however you may want to slow down the process. One way of doing this is to treat the decking by adding a stain or repainting it. Retreating it and sealing it every couple of years should help add a few extra years to the decking, you can also use a stain or paint that has a water sealer or wood preserver which is a good economical combination, doing two jobs at once.

Rot

Always check for staining and mould to the joists as this is the foundation of your garden decking. There can be a build up of dirt and water around the posts and these need to be checked every now and again. Water build-up can be a real enemy to wood, so check for this too. Replace any planks that have wood rot with new ones, so your decking can be given a new lease of life.

Mould

Do I need planning permission for garden decking?

It all depends on the type of structure you’re going to build. It is possible that this will be the case, and if it’s not a house, but some other kind of building then you will need planning permission.

The circumstances where you may need planning permission is when you’re near a motorway, if it’s more than 30cm above the ground and if it covers more than 50% of the garden. You need to take care that it doesn’t invade privacy, and that it’s not attached to a listed building. If your decking is going to be in a conservation area or a national trust then you will be expected to make sure that your decking is in proportion with the rest of your property

How long does garden decking last?

What type of wood you use can determine the lifespan of your decking. If it’s a durable wood it can last up to 15 years or more.

Can water make garden decking unsafe to walk on?

Yes, it can do but if you keep the decking surface clean and make sure there’s no mildew, algae or moss then these won’t collect to create slippery deposits. Make sure you also brush the decking with a good quality broom and clean it, maybe once year in warm weather with a power spray.

If the ground in my garden isn’t flat can I still have garden decking?

If your garden slopes slightly you can still have decking and you’ll find it’s the perfect solution for it. Slopes can be straightened out with good support beneath the decking. No more sloping garden, welcome sleek, straight garden decking.

Is it possible to have a hot tub installed on my garden decking?

Yes it is, however the decking will need to be specifically designed to support the extra weight. The timber used will need to be stress graded in order to provide the support needed. However, with this in mind, there is no reason why you can’t have a hot tub if you take the necessary precautions.

Is garden decking environmentally friendly?

Wooden decking is one of the most sustainable products used in building timber can be recycled once it’s past its sell by date. Much of the timber used in the UK comes from Scandinavian countries where it’s much colder and the quality of woods comes with less knots.
